Dear IFT Members:
 
I saw where Gov. Mitch Daniels and his cronies are boasting about their $2.2 billion budget surplus.  You and I know where it came from.  The vast majority of their windfall came from the pockets of working men and women, public education, and social services.
 
Once again these actions beg the question: What are you willing to do about it?  Are you going to throw up your hands and simply accept what they have done to public education or are you willing to stand up and fight for what you believe in and have dedicated your life to?  Together, in a unified act of solidarity, we can reverse the harm that has been done in the Statehouse.
 
Will it be easy?  No!  But it will be better than accepting and working under the devastating blows that were leveled on us by the last two legislative sessions.  We must make sure that we do the following:
1.    be registered to vote,
2.    make sure all family members are registered,
3.    study the positions or voting records of those seeking office,
4.    vote,
5.    work hard for candidates that will support public education, and
6.    work hard to defeat incumbents that voted to harm us.
 
We would all be shocked if we knew how many of our union brothers and sisters in public education and other unions:
1.    are not registered to vote,
2.    were registered, but did not vote, or
3.    voted, but voted for those that harmed us.
 
I implore you to get involved and work hard to elect those candidates that will reverse the harm that has been inflected on you and your families.  Call your local leadership and ask what you can do.  Your future and the future of public education are at stake.

Thank you for visiting the website of Professional & Administrative Association/AFT-MI local 4467 at Wayne County Community College District.  Our local has been in existence since XXXX at the college.  Our union represents full-time and part-time members.  From its inception our mission has been to protect the rights of our members, negotiate and bargain with the employer for fair wages and benefits, and works jointly with all stakeholders at Wayne County Community College District while providing quality services and programs for the students.  We encourage our members to actively participate in every learning opportunity for the advancement of our union and we strive to prepare those who will follow in our footsteps.

AFT Supports Special Olympians Competing in Winter Games

The AFT continued its support of the Special Olympics program with an event in Utah to send off the U.S. athletes to the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho. The AFT and its members have long been involved with the Special Olympics, and, for two years now, the national union has supported the U.S. Special Olympians by helping fund transportation costs for the athletes to attend the games and for their transportation during the games. This year's send-off event on Feb. 5 in Salt Lake City featured remarks by AFT Utah president Debbie White. "You should be proud of yourself for having the desire and the commitment to be part of Team USA. It takes great courage to travel so far and compete against athletes from all over the world," said White. The games, which were held Feb. 7-13, attracted more than 2,000 athletes from nearly 100 countries, as well as thousands of family members, coaches, volunteers and spectators. [Read more.]

New Web Site Provides Tool for Teaching Democracy

The Albert Shanker Institute and Freedom House recently unveiled Democracy Web, a new site designed to fill a need in America's schools for educational material that not only describes the U.S. experience with democracy, but also compares it with that of every country in the world, including those where citizens lack a vote and a voice. "Democracy's survival depends upon our transmitting to each new generation the political vision of liberty and equality that unites us as Americans," says AFT president Randi Weingarten, who also is president of the Shanker Institute. Democracy Web is composed of two sections: an interactive, global Map of Freedom, and an online study guide designed to assist secondary school and college-level educators as they prepare lesson plans. Update from NECW (February 2, 2009)

It is hard to believe but Thursday, January 22 marked the First-year Anniversary!!! for the election of CFT/AFT as our union representative with Northcoast Children's Services.  Our NECW Negotiations Team (Jennifer Turley, Julie Oakes, Beverly Hanns, Erica Dones and Terri Eleverum, CFT Field Representative) continues to meet with NCS representatives to reach a contract settlement. Read more for updates...
