Good Afternoon,
To date your negotiation team has met with the administrative team on: February 24, 2010, March 4, 2010, March 17, 2010, March 31, 2010, April 14, 2010, May 4, 2010, May 26, 2010, June 7, 2010, June 16, 2010, June 29, 2010, October 28, 2010, November 22, 2010 and most recently on February 7, 2011.
As you are aware, following our meeting of November 22, 2010, impasse was filed jointly with the management team and we waited for a mediator to be assigned and scheduled. That first session was scheduled by PERC for February 7, 2011. Unfortunately the mediator was ill and the meeting did not occur, resulting in a future March meeting.
Your team took this opportunity to re-visit economic items and re-open dialogue with management. While we were pleased with the direction of the conversation, no additional items were finalized. However, we feel cautiously optimistic that we will be able to settle with a modest increase and without the assistance of the mediator.
Please rest assured that your team remains committed to maintaining a fair contract while preserving the benefits of our previous contracts. A future member meeting will be held as soon as we have more information that we can share.

It’s 1988 all over again for schoolteachers

I am a retired Monongalia County teacher. During the past 30 years, I have taught thousands of students and would do it all over again. In that time, I was actively involved in the processes that would bring about better pay and working conditions for teachers. I lobbied in Charleston, wrote to and met with legislators, and wrote letters to the editor, to mention a few. I do not apologize, as some would have me do, for trying to achieve a level of fair pay to benefit my own family and children.
I kept copies of some of my letters to the editor. Recently, I gave a copy of a 23-year-old letter I wrote to The Dominion Post to my AFT (American Federation of Teachers) representative and told him to show it to politicians during the legislative session. It was uncanny how it clearly showed nothing has changed in the past 23 years. The same points of dissatisfaction with pay and lack of respect for the teaching profession in West Virginia I made in 1988 are still being made in 2011.
