Support for Chicago Teachers Union

The 18,000-member American Federation of Teachers-Maryland pledges its full support to the 30,000 teachers and staff of the Chicago Teachers Union who are on strike.

AFT-Maryland and its affiliates throughout the state stand with the Chicago Teachers Union and support its members in their efforts to secure a fair contract that will enable them to improve instruction, and ensure job security and fair compensation for educators.

We are proud to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in their fight to ensure that every child in Chicago’s public schools has access to a great education, and that educators and their work are valued.

NORMAJEAN NIEBUR RECOMMENDS

Campus Workers' Wages: a Disgrace to Academe

"More than 700,000 employees at American colleges—gardeners, security guards, cleaning crews, janitors, food-service personnel, etc.—do not earn a living wage, the bare-bones amount sufficient to provide a minimally decent standard of living for their families. This is a disgrace to our system of higher education and a sad reflection on the moral leadership of our colleges.

"Can these campus conditions change? Increased student activism could successfully pressure college administrations to improve the working conditions of their low-wage workers. But until public officials, administrators, faculty members, students, and the general public are sufficiently aroused to demand major changes, it is unlikely that we will see a major transformation in the way colleges in this country are run." Planning Time Rights & Information

We have received a number of calls recently regarding planning time rights. According to law, each classroom teacher is entitled to at least 450 minutes within each two-week period for instructional preparation, including parent-teacher conferences, evaluating students’ work, and planning. A planning and preparation period under this section may not be less than 45 minutes within the instructional day.
