Want a raise???

Although KOSE bargains for pay raises, those pay raises have to be placed in the budget and approved by the legislature before they can take effect.  Last year for the first time, the Kansas Legislature aproved a two-year budget.  That budget did not include raises for state employees.

The 2014 legislative session begins on Monday, January 13.  Contact your legislators and tell them that pay increases for state employees should be a priority!

Update Jan.13, 2014

Dear Colleagues,
Happy New Year! As we begin a new calendar year we have much to be proud of and many tasks ahead of us. My hope is that 2014 brings you good health, happiness and success in all you do. My utmost wish is that we continue to join together to build a strong HTA that always works, supports and is there for one another.

Shaved Heads for Charity

Onteora coach Andy Occhi shaved his head in a "Coaches vs. Cancer" tournament hosted by Kingston schools in December, which raised more than $2,000 for the charity.  Pictured here with their new haircuts:  Onteora coach Andy Occhi (left) and Wallkill coach A.J. Higby (right).

It’s time for the State Legislature to head back to Olympia on Monday, Jan. 13, to begin their “short” 60-day session!

Healthcare Transparency and Accountability Act

Are you tired of high insurance costs?  Feeling like our insurance pools are strongly discouraged from looking at other choices?  Thank you to Lisa Nowak, our NBEA Insurance Representative, she has found that there may be a glimmer of hope in the upcoming legislative session:

Healthcare Transparency and Accountability Act- supported by Education Minnesota.

Purpose: To ensure educators and school employees around the state receive quality, affordable health coverage at a competitive and stable cost.

What the bill will do: It will strengthen the current process in which most educators and school employees get health insurance by making it more competitive and transparent, resulting in more affordable coverage. The bill will set basic requirements and guidelines for school districts to follow regarding employee health coverage.
