Comments on Natchaug Hospital’s OSHA Citations Over Safety Violations During the Pandemic

State and local union leaders and activists made the following public remarks regarding the federal worksite agency’s months-long investigation at the behavioral health facility:

“Hartford HealthCare (HHC)’s executives should be responsible for ensuring its nurses and health professionals are properly equipped to provide safe patient care,” said AFT Connecticut President John Brady, RN.

Today, PFT President Jerry T. Jordan joined Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03), AFT President Randi Weingarten, NEA President Lily Eskelsen García, Representative Jahana Hayes (CT-05), and Representative Donald Norcross (NJ-01) to urge immediate action on a school construction initiative as part of a federal infrastructure package.

OSHA: Natchaug Failed to Protect Us During the Pandemic

This week, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) confirmed what we have long known to be true: Natchaug Hospital and Hartford HealthCare are failing to protect frontline workers during the pandemic.
 
After our members took a stand against unsafe conditions, OSHA issued Natchaug three citations for unlawfully:

  • Holding our local and affiliate unions accountable for eliminating racist and exclusionary practices;
  • Participating in conversations about changing the city of Seattle’s budget priorities by increasing allotments for housing, healthcare, and education;

    The following statement is read before meetings of the Executive Board meetings of AFT 1789:
     
    We acknowledge that we are on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Coast Salish Duwamish people, past and present. We honor with gratitude the land itself and pay our respects to the Coast Salish Duwamish people. Land acknowledgment is a traditional custom dating back centuries for many Native communities and nations. We express our respect and honor the Indigenous peoples of the land on which we work and live.
