President’s Statement on Richard Trumka’s Passing

AFT-Oregon President Jaime Rodriguez issued the following statement:

“Today we mourn the sudden passing of AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka. President Trumka was the son of a miner who rose to the highest level of labor leadership. He was a dedicated advocate for workers of all sectors. The middle-class, workers and labor have lost a great friend today. I hope we have learned from him that solidarity and the rights-of-workers are not privileged, but must be bargained for annually. My condolences and prayers go out to the Trumka and labor families.”

Statement from AFT-Maryland President Kenya Campbell on the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka

On behalf of AFT-Maryland, I offer condolences to the Trumka and entire AFL-CIO family on the passing of Richard Trumka. Mr. Trumka served at the helm of the AFL-CIO for nearly 12 years, leading with concern and care for every worker in the United States. His leadership on behalf of the working people in this country has been well documented and will continue to be in the days to come as people all over the world eulogize him.

Welcome Back to a New School Year!

We want to welcome back all employees of Jefferson Parish! It felt like the summer would never come, and now we are preparing for a new school year! We hope you spent some quality time with family and friends for some much-needed rest and rejuvenation after the most difficult year in living history.

We have been hard at work over the summer, negotiating a Collective Bargaining Agreement that is guaranteed for the next 3 years, with language that has been added for the first time in six years. We are also excited to present several new and returning JFT member committees.

BACK TO SCHOOL

It’s hard to believe that summer is already ending. Many districts had expanded summer school options for students who struggled through the pandemic-year. This left many educators with even less time to recuperate from an especially exhausting year. But as always, the prospect of a new school year brings excitement and opportunity.

LFT staff are preparing to greet new and returning educators at orientations and back to school events all over the state. If you are already a member of the Federation, make sure to check in with your Local representatives at these events so that you can get all the most up-to-date information about your membership and back-to-school goodies. If you aren’t already a member of the Federation, you’re missing out. Make sure to look for us at your orientation to learn more about all that membership has to offer!
