To All NTU and CASA Members: All workers and their families are under attack!

Dear Colleagues,

Across the country, the working class has been under attack from a concentrated effort to strip away their legally-guaranteed protections. In New Jersey, educators have been a constant target of the Governor. Nowhere has this been more apparent than in Newark and the other state-controlled school districts.

Letter From the President - January 2016

Colleagues,

While the now discredited Cami Anderson was still in office and the current SAS Sup't Chris Cerf was N.J. Commissioner of Education, they agreed to the following language in our contract regarding Supplemental Fringe Benefits:

1. That the SFBF shall solicit open market competitive quotes on the entire supplemental employee benefit package bargaining unit members.

2. That the SFBF shall, after review of all quotes, review and select a benefit provider.

Large Turnout to Call for Resignation of Board Member David Gerard

Thank you to all teachers who came to the board meeting this Tuesday, and to all those who spoke up to support students, teachers and our district to denounce the inappropriate emails from Mr. Gerard. The evening was impressive with students, teachers, administrators, and community members all asking for his resignation. It was heartwarming to be joined at this meeting by so many highly-regarded members of the community, including Roger Knopf (Inaugural Recipient of Leadership Morgan Hill’s Excellence in Leadership Award), George Thomas (longtime Chair of the Live Oak Foundation), former MHUSD Trustees Shellé Thomas, Julie Zintsmaster, and Kathy Sullivan, and Brian Sullivan (Charter School of Morgan Hill Trustee). Many of these people took to the microphone, and the theme was clear: our district and community are better than the behavior exhibited by Mr. Gerard.

Win at Porter Medical Center!

We won a major victory when we settled a grievance concerning overtime that placed Helen Porter RNs on the same wage scale as Porter Hospital RNs. The grievance settlement led to an average base pay increase of $2.72.

Jerilyn Langsdon, RN, Helen Porter Memory Care Unit representative, started the ball rolling on this back in August. When Jerilyn received a memo that PMC was changing the overtime pay structure at Helen Porter, she recognized it as a potential contract violation and contacted her union.

We filed a grievance, which ultimately led to this settlement.
